Open and Affirming Covenant

A Message from our Moderator:

I  am pleased to let you know that in a congregational meeting on September 13, the congregation voted 71-4 with one abstention to adopt our Open and Affirming (ONA) Covenant.  This means that we are stating publicly that “[w]e welcome into our community persons of every gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, every mental and physical ability, age, race, nationality, economic and social status, faith background, marital standing and family structure.”  It also means that we will be listed among the ONA congregations on the UCC website, a credential that can be meaningful to members of the community in search of a church home.

Our Covenant declares: “As a community of believers, we the members and friends of First Congregational United Church Of Christ, Elyria extend an extravagant welcome, hospitality and God’s love to ALL.”  If you are a someone who wonders why it took so long for us to get to this point, you are welcome at First Church.  If you are a person who’s uncomfortable with the covenant, you are welcome at First Church.  If you are a person who has been turned away other churches, you are welcome at First Church.  What is expected of each of us is to extend God’s love, and to speak and listen to each other with respect and kindness.  In that spirit, all are welcome, no exceptions!
